Istanbul – Between East and West
Istanbul straddles both sides of the Bosporus, and is the only city on two continents, Europe and Asia literraly meet here, and on the City’s streets. The first settlement in ancient times was probably European in origin.
“If the world where just one country, Istanbul would be its capital”. The French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, much given to quotes, was a huge admirer of past civilisations and recognised in the then Ottoman capital, the remains of centuries and centuries of powerful empires. Under any of the different names which it has adopted over its almost 3.000 years of existence, Istanbul is a unique city owing to its strategic location at the join of two great continents.
